Truly Green or Greenwashing?
Greenwashing describes claims of "eco-friendliness" that are overstated and/or false. As the green marketplace continues to expand we can expect to see the instances of such greenwashing increase. But there are also many companies who have made and continue to take genuine progress towards developing more sustainable products and processes. It's critical that consumers be able to differentiate between the two so that we can encourage the genuine efforts and dissuade the disingenuous. The greenwashing index is an attempt to rate the "green claims" made by various businesses for this purpose. We encourage you to check it out and contribute.
It's important to realize that consumer perceptions are not always informed by all the facts. Often a consumer's perceptions of a product or brand are formed by mere snippets of information. But there are also those consumers who make it their mission to learn every facet of a product or service, and they may also contribute to the index ratings. So take it with a grain of salt, but contribute your own ratings too!
